Effects of Using a Photographic Cueing Package During Routine School Transitions With a Child Who Has Autism
Schmit, Alper, Raschke, and Ryndak combine to write an insightful paper on how we can make transition easier for student who struggle with communicative disorders like Autism and the way in which we as teachers can help ease those transitions. The article “Effects of Using a Photographic Cueing Package During Routine School Transitions With a Child Who Has Autism”uses real life examples to show the practical ways we as teacher can help educate those struggling with disabilities. However I think that we as teachers could and should move to include these examples in our teaching with the rest of the class as well to engage all parts of the brain. This article also states the importance of advanced cues using the example of a 28 year old man with autism and moderate mental retardation that tantrums occur less often when advance notice was given as opposed to immediate change. However verbal ques are often not sufficient when dealing with students with special needs. This article is similar to the story of Chris in the previous article instead this boy was named Alex and instead of PECS the used a photographic cueing system. Much of the work done in these studies is done to reduce the "confusion and severe anxiety" that comes along with transitions for many students.
I am including transitional techniques for students with disabilities like Autism,in my inquiry study, because I believe that the lessons
learned from them can be more widely applied to other students who are just struggling and in need of another method. Not to mention that I also believe that it is important to incorporate all our students’ needs in one class to build the school community, and acceptance between students.
I also think that many of these actions such as a routine and well define expectations contribute to students feeling safe in the class thereby contributing to their social emotional learning, and giving the students a better chance for academic success.
